Grind Baby Grind

I've really come to love participating in these shared topics from Blog Azeroth. There's nothing like a good prompt to get the creative juices flowing. This week's topic is brought to us by that one dang fool from Kallixta's Notes.

Normally the words "Best" and "Grind" are not found this close together and there are plenty of grinds to hate. However, I'm interested in the flip side:

Was there something that required sustained and prolonged effort that you found interesting or rewarding? Was there something that was not just a chore to work on?

I'm assuming most grinds are for Reputation, but maybe you have a novel definition?

I'll be quite frank here and fully admit that I do love me a good grind. No, not that sort of grind you pervs...well, maybe that too but that's not the subject at hand!

*Ahem*

For me there's two sorts of grinds in WoW: the "OMG I need a spork RIGHT FRIGGEN NOW so that I may gouge my eyes out." and the "Dude, I've had a hella rough day and I just want to mindlessly run in circles while killing some ogres. If you need me, leave a message with my secretary, Fabio. He'll relay them to me once I'm done here." Let me lay out some examples for you.

The type of grind that I absolutely cannot stand is the sort where you have no control over how fast or slow the pace is. The prime example for this would be the Argent Tournament. I could probably run off on a ranty tangent right about now and give you thirty different reasons as to why I hate the Argent Tournament, but the number one reason would be that...well, it just sucked, okay? You had to do this quest grind to open up that quest grind, which in turn eventually opened up this quest grind that granted you the seals. Once you were able to obtain seals you were essentially a slave to those *insert a line of explicit words here* quest givers until you were able to purchase every last good that you came to collect. For me it was all of the mounts, a tabard, and the pony bridle. Granted I took many breaks since the tourni came to town, but it was essentially over two bloody years before I managed to collect everything that I came for. It's a good thing I found good deals on the auction house for all those darn pets...

*Big deep breath in, slowly exhales.*

Now, the type of grind I love is one where I'm allowed to set the pace. Generally these grinds tend to be out-of-date reputation grinds but I suppose even fishing on occasion could fit into this category. A prime example of this would be the Kurenai reputation grind in Nagrand. I loved that grind so much that I did it not once, but twice. Why did I love it though, you wonder. For one it was quiet. It was fairly rare that I'd run into another reputation seeker or quester out on the western side of Nagrand, so I was left to kill ogres as I pleased with little to no interruption. For two, people rarely mess with you when you're on a mission. My guildies always new enough at the time that if I wasn't sitting in some city I was out working on getting new mounts; they usually didn't get between me and my mounts. Sure I'd get the occasional person asking me to invite their new alt in or whatever, but there wasn't any "Saz, let's run this!" "Saz, lead this raid." "MOOOOOM TIMMY ATE MY CANDY BAR." stuff to deal with. It was my quiet time to do as I pleased, and no one messed with it. Ultimately though the rhythm and pacing of gaining the Kurenai rep was such that it relaxed me, smacking multitudes of ogres upside the head with my axes was just an added stress reliever. It was redundant, predictable, and very much allowed me to clear my mind.

Now that you get the general idea on what I think is a good or bad grind, let's get to the actual question. Typically what I look for when I'm searching for the next ideal grind is one of or a combination of the following:

1. The pace must be able to be set by the participator, at least in part.
2. In the event that the participator cannot choose the pace in which the grind takes place, the quests locking said participator into a time frame must have some sort of comic relief to help enhance enjoyment of said grind.
3. The grind must have some sort of grand award at the end making the grind worth the effort. (Current viable gear is excluded from this category.)
4. While mental challenges are welcome on occasion, if the participator fails after multiple attempts even after consulting the Holy Reference Book of Azeroth (aka Wowhead), the grind has ceased being enjoyable. The participant must enjoy said challenge or must simply be able to finish their task in an efficient manner. To help alleviate this situation, please refer back to the second part of statement number 2.
5. I don't want no scrub, a scrub is a grind that can't get no love from me.

Saz's Grind Worthy Recommendations
- Oh My, Kurenai! Mounts, Achievement, Tabard
- Netherwing Mounts and DA BOOTERANG!! Okay, you can't keep the booterang, but maaaan is it fun to use. Prime example of comedic relief helping to break up the monotony of having to quest day after day.
- Wintersaber Trainers (new version) I'm not to familiar with the Horde's version of this line They Grow Up So Fast, but the quests for the Alliance to get exalted with the Wintersaber Trainers are completely adorable. Definitely worth the 20 days it takes to complete vs the 20 days of actual grinding you had to do, even post nerf of difficulty.
- Loremaster This is one of those grinds best done in pieces. Thanks to the new Cataclysm revamps you can do just that. Even if you're not one who typically likes questing, like myself, you may still find many of the new zones well worth your time.
- Scepter of the Shifting Sands Soooo, you can't do this quest line/grind anymore. My recommendation though is to get in good with Chromie and travel back in time. Seriously, it was that good.

The "Dude, don't grind that..." List
- Anything that has less than a 1% drop rate. Save your sanity and stop now.
- The Argent Tournament. Really...just...no.
- Bloody Rare/Frostbitten Sure, these are a bit easier to obtain than what they were a year or two ago, but still. Save your mind. Stay away from da voodoo.
- Don't sit around for 12+ hours waiting for a rare spawn. If you do, side effects include: sleepiness, nervous twitching, irritability, explosive nerd rage, A.D.D., involuntary noises, numb butt syndrome, starvation, and an excessive need to pee.
- The Insane It has this title for a reason people, beware.

Do I take my advice ever? Nay, which is all the more reason to balance out the bad grinds with the good. The bad grinds are necessary, even though they're painful. In a way they highlight just how good you had it when you were grinding x faction rep while you're pummeling your forehead with a crayon with faction rep y. Sometimes those crappy grinds yield great things though, giving us a sense of completion and elation that gives us a very positive release.

What was my point again with this closing? I haven't the slightest, my brain went straight into the gutter. Since I am now thoroughly brainless, I shall leave you with one final thought:

Any guild master, raid leader, parent, and/or average Joe knows that clearing one's mind is an absolute must from time to time.  Some people like to do that with a glass of wine, a hot bubble bath, maybe a bit of quiet music. Me? I like a nice, steady grind that will last me through the night...just so long as it doesn't go on too long. If it does, things start to hurt.

Happy Thursday!

It's that time of the week again. I'm sure you're all waiting on pins and needles for the latest installment of Hoarders, aren't you? I knew it! Well, I'll be putting that up shortly, but first! I feel the urge to babble about what I've been doing. Go ahead and roll your eyes if you'd like, I'd just like to keep a record of the order of events that have been going on as of late.

It's what, day 3 now of me looking for Nuramoc? Still no sign of him. Matter of fact, I'm watching for him right now. Mad multi-tasking skill, eh?

The past two days have consisted of rep grinds for me on both my Shaman and Druid. Tonight mainly consisted of me spending an unhealthy amount of gold on the Thorium Brotherhood rep. I'm roughly half way through revered, so hopefully just another run or two through MC and I'll have enough cores to pop me through exalted. On the topic of MC, I got no Sulfron Ingot love yet again, nor did I get any Blood of the Mountain love. I did however score two relatively cheap ingots on the AH a bit ago (800gish...not bad imo), but now that I'm back down to 20k gold, I put a halt to my purchases for the evening. Hopefully I can get the last of what I need for the legendary mace verrrry soon here. I'm getting close!

Last night (that is to say, 24 hours ago) I managed to get Kelebek her Bloodsail Admiral title, which was pretty exciting. Now just to get that on Saz as well! First things first though, I must finish the Scepter quest line...which I actually have good news about. That book bit that didn't drop off of Onyxia? It was restored to me by a very sweet GM. I also bugged him about a few other minor things...a UI bug for one that I'm having on Saz, which he emailed me a fix for, and for two I pestered him about my Spirit Wolves AI. Lately they've taken a liking to going after mobs that are no where near me. Like, opposite of a large room no where near me. Apparently they didn't have any flags about it, so hopefully they'll dig into it and fix them soon. Doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it's usually right before they despawn and I end up being a dead Shaman on defloor (insert a Jose Jalapeno accent onto that last bit). So uh...yeah, the blue part of my scepter chain is almost done! I just need 6 more Elementium Ingots (oh boy...that's gonna hurt the wallet), and to finish the red quest. One more little step after these two are completed, and then I believe I'm done! I'm actually really nervous about making it by next Tuesday...by nervous I mean hella worried. Like, bad.

Also on the topic of rep AND the scepter quest line, one more complete run through AQ40, plus turning in all the bits for my AQ gear (which I have all but one idol I believe), plus the rest of the scepter chain, and I should just barely squeak out an exalted rep with the Brood. Kinda pumped.

So! The to do list for this week is kind of a doosy.
- Get a full clear AQ 40 run.
- Get the full AQ 40 gear set.
- Clear BWL and successfully do the red quest (/scared to mess it up)
- Finish the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest line
- Farm MC trash for cores and Blood of the Mountains
- Find Nuramoc and make him mine!
- Maybe get some peeps to run BT so I can finally be exalted with the Ashtongue Deathsworn
- Get Bloodsail Admiral on Saz
- BG farm to the best of my laggy abilities to get the last tabard needed for Twenty-Five Tabards
- Level the DK a little more so I can go mining without dying.
- Remember to eat/sleep/shower/drink/do other general RL things

This, my friends, is a horribly daunting list. I WILL get this done though! I'm determined...crazy...but determined.

Innnnn other news, as neat as this pre-Cataclysm event is, it needs to be done. The earth shaking, the invasion, the constant slaughter of my poor little alts as they try to check the mailbox for the newest shipment of gold sales...it needs to be over with already. Today I moved all three of my bankers to the Exodar simply because every time I logged over to them, I saw the following:

Never failed. Amazingly only my Mage managed to not die to the elementals, though she came close last night. Her hearth was set to Shattrath, so moving her was no big deal (I've since learn how to teleport on her, thanks to the trainer in Shatt). The Paladin and Warrior were a different story though. The Pally only died once while on her way to the docks of Stormwind...the Warrior? He got his poop pushed in twice. Irritating to say the least. All I wanted to do was mail things from my guild bank to Saz...

What was kinda neat at first has just become a royal hassle, especially now that everyone's lost interest and the invasions seem to last three times as long now simply because no one cares. Go go Deathwing, destroy some shiz so we can go back to semi normalcy, kthnx.

My wish of the week - besides wishing that my list of things gets accomplished that is - is wishing I had something that could fraps Deathwing destroying the royal crap out of Azeroth. If anyone's doing something of that nature and posting it on youtube, hook me up with a link! I'm sure it'll still be cool in the low settings/low fps version, but I long to see Deathwing in all his destructive glory! So yeah, hook a girl up ;  )

Okay okay, enough Saz babble. I'll go get to putting this week's Hoarders up.

Insane!

It's a question you've been asking us for a little while now. And, based on all the posts, emails, petitions, and letters we received following the announcement that the Insane in the Membrane achievement would no longer be in available in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, we started to wonder if maybe we had gone a bit loco.

So, we went back to the drawing board. After carefully reviewing all the feedback and discussing the matter amongst ourselves, we're now happy to report that we will be making the following changes to the Feat of Strength:

  • Exalted reputation with Shen'dralar will no longer be required. As this is the only reputation that will be unobtainable in Cataclysm, we've simply decided to remove it as a requirement.

For those who already earned Exalted reputation with this faction, don't worry -- we haven't forgotten about your accomplishments. In a future patch, we'll be adding in a separate Feat of Strength to recognize your deep love of Dire Maul.

  • Bloodsail Buccaneer faction reputation will remain in-game. Also, to ensure that this change does not negatively affect Cataclysm quest progression in Stranglethorn Vale, Booty Bay Bruisers will now provide reputation up through Exalted.

This will ensure that players will still be able to attain Insane in the Membrane and "The Insane" title in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Please note, however, that these changes will not take effect until The Shattering in patch 4.0.3a -- excluding the separate "Exalted with Shen'dralar" feat, which will be introduced in a future, but currently-undetermined patch.

And, of course, those who are already Insane in the Membrane will retain their title and current Feat of Strength. Shine on, you crazy diamonds."

So, I still have a chance to get Insane in the Membrane?!?! And I can potentially get exalted with the pirates and Steamwheedle? /UBERHAPPYDANCE!!!

Saz the Insane...has a nice, albeit ridiculous, ring to it.

Ravenholdt will still be a pain in the bottom (gotta get my Rogue leveled!), as will Darkmoon Faire, buuuut...I still have a chance!

This day is a happy one!!!

Green + Blue = Epic

First off, I'd like to share some funnies, and then we shall get into what I really want to babble about.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Alamo

Storng cat durid is haf no ninervate ok? This link makes your head hurt a bit, but it's oh so funny, and oh so true imo : P

http://www.wowwiki.com/Server:Tichondrius_US/Halbrium

This PvP guide is an old favorite of mine. It's funny lines have managed to stick in my head like transparent glue for the better part of this past year.

H'okay! Now that the hilarity has ceased, down to the epicness!!!!1!!11

K, so my priest friend and I were working on our Scepter quest line, correct? Well, we finished our Green portion of said quest line, and let me just say....the fight against Eranikus was pretty famazing. I ended up tanking him though because little level 73 Remulos didn't stand a chance in keeping aggro off me. Towards the end I was taking about 3k nature damage per tick, but between my healing (both through wolves when they were up, and my maelstorm heals), the healing of my priesty friend (bubble/mending/whatever else she threw at me), and eventually Tyrande, the slow killing of Eranikus wasn't too bad. A tad chaotic, but all in all an amazing encounter. It was really nice to be able to free Eranikus, as opposed to toting around his poor tortured soul in a trinket.

Please excuse the incredibly plain UI. The computer I've been playing on had a CPU death, and I've had to resort to a craptastically crappy laptop. I refer to it as my lagtop.

Once this was completed, we began our Blue portion of the quest line.

Before I go any further I must state that Azuregos is my fucking hero. Don't even bother to pardon my language there.

Ahem, as I was saying, we began the Blue part. A-mazing. We're probably only about half way done currently, but from what I've seen thus far, it's a hilarious goose chase at best. From Azuregos's hair-brained way of hiding his portion of the scepter (I gave it to a fish. Not just any fish, mortal. a minnow. This fish was a minnow. A very special minnow) to what we have to aquire to get said minnow (there's something that deals with a 500 pound chicken, a crazy gnome in love with all things velvet, a lonely mermaid, talking to afore mentioned gnome's ex b.f.f. that resides in a crate, to taking on someone named Dr. Weavil), to having to collect bits of a book so that we can read something in draconic...let's just say there are many laughs to be had. While there are several farming headaches (I can only imagine how painful this was at 60), this quest line as thus far been worth all the hours.

Unfortunately the plans to get through Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, and Onyxia to get our missing book pieces fell through for the day, so our journey is halted for a bit. Perhaps if it rains I can stay in town for a day longer!

Because todays plans fell through, I did some much needed farming. Rep farming that is! On my shaman I've managed to finish off my Consortium rep (fiiiinally, I've been slacking and this one took a few more hours than planned), thus getting the achievement for them and getting the 35 Exalted Reputations achievement. Later on I'll go pick up the Consortium's tabard and attempt to live in a few bgs to get the Stormpike Battle tabard so I can grab my 25 Tabards achievement. Have I ever mentioned how much I love achievements?

Today I also finished off my druid's Argent Dawn rep, and to top that one off, Baron dropped his mount!!! I was soooo very happy to have gotten that after only 23 kills. I also managed to pop the Stable Keeper achievement off of learning Baron's mount (epic, I know...I don't collect on my druid like I do the shaman). I'm very very excited to say the least. The downer of the day for the druid though was realizing on the last day of Brewfest that I wouldn't be able to get enough tokens to renew my Brew of the Month Club subscription. I'm one lousy brew away from that achievement *hangs head dejectively*. I'll have to remember that one for next year.

On the topic of mounts, this morning I managed to get a ram on my warlock's Brewfest bag. Kind of exciting, I guess. So this year's Brewfest total is: 4 rams (1 shaman, 2 hunter, 1 lock), 2 Tankard of Terrors (1 shaman, 1 lock), and 1 remote (lock). Fail RNG is fail. Guess I'm waiting yet another year for that illusive kodo :  /

That's all I have for the moment. Until more adventures are had, stay cool.
